‘SHARING HER APPLES’: Critiques…

20/06/2024/in Creative writing/by Diamantoula T.

SHARING HER APPLES is my first fictional story and it is for adults.

It is based on the theme of women’s vulnerability in armed conflicts, women being raped and maltreated, and left alive with a ruinous sense of injustice, and a crave to avenge: a story of inner passions and tensions. In extreme situations, as it was with Katie in the story, this crave became her main purpose of living and led to her mental health deterioration, but not before she secured a future for her little girl.

Some of the criticisms I have received for the book are flippant and plain simplifications.

They say that it touches upon sensitive political issues, for the setting of the story that serves the theme, reminds of certain misconducts against women that occurred during the civil war in Bosnia, in the 20th century, and indeed, such misconducts have and are likely to occur in most wars; but they omit that it also shows the instabilities and prejudices within nonintegrated ethnic communities living side by side in nominal peace.

Others, just from reading a summary and taking it as if it was a true life-story, tend to ignore the whole book and its underlined issues, on the pretext that painful events have occurred long ago by a minority and that saving the self-esteem of new generations and their hopes to a peaceful growth is more importance that the past.

Yet, from A to Z, my story is entirely fictional, a tale inspired by reading of the then trials at the International Criminal Court -the ICTY, in The Hague (as it is explained in my note on the first pages of the book).

It is a story for adults and aims at focusing on the enduring damage which is being done to women during armed conflicts, which, in most cases, destroy their self-confidence and any of their future hopes for a normal life. Further, the exposure of  the victims’ suffering and misery intends to sensitize the public to the message behind the lines, that such violence, any violence indeed,  against women should never be tolerated.

So, in reply, I’d like to brush off any such criticism, in particular those regarding the ‘political’ sensitivity of issues mentioned in my book, Sharing Her Apples,

by referring to John Boyne’s reply to his own critics for his book ‘The Boy In The Striped Pyjamas’, and say that learning the facts about the war and the war crimes in Bosnia during the ninety nineties, should not be done through reading a fable”.

SHARING HER APPLES:  Κριτικές…
