Cultural sensitivity in writing: tips for portraying Diverse Characters

19/11/2023/in Creative writing/by Diamantoula T.

In writing fiction, I find that neutrality and therefore fairness is a difficult concept/issue if you care to portraying diverse characters’ emotions and actions as plausible as possible. The plot and characters are bound to be somewhat bargained by the writer’s own attitudes, prejudices, experiences and logic’s conclusions. But, perhaps, this is what constitutes the richness in creative writing: the staging of diverse personalities, fictional or not, real or semi-real, probable or imaginable and their conduct/performance in given circumstances.

One of the major challenges is the use of cultural issues and sensitivities involved in the most possibly unbiased way, so that their influence on the personalities and their actions, is coloring behaviors and plays a part in explaining events in the story; that is, portraying diverse characters as plausibly as it is possible.

The process of doing this, involves two critical and dynamic techniques:

  1. To imagine yourself being the character/s, like an actor performing a role, and try to answer questions of ‘what ‘ifs’’; e.g. ‘what if I were in his/her shoes’ , ‘how should I feel on this or that,’ ‘to what extent could my own morals, prejudices, likes and dislikes dictate activities were I to be in similar situations as the actor in a story’, etc.
  2. a) To research about the premises of your imagination, where the inspiration to write about issues came from, and how could different people see and appraise behavior in such events and conflicts in given settings/circumstances, real or imaginary.
    b) To read as much as possible whatever is in the public domain, about others’ lives, cultural influences, experiences, emotions and dealings, in real life’s stories, or in tails, and in general, in what you can find already published in the world.

In SHARING HER APPLES, my debut story, the effort was on the settings, the intricacies in fashioning the plot, and dealing with emotions in hard, cruel situations. In particular, rape and brutality to women and children in wars, -a likely repeated theme in all wars, are issues that leave no-one untouched because of the cruelty and the long-lasting damage to the individuals.

Το write the story many hours of research about diverse communities, the influence of culture on the protagonists, and the human ‘waste’ left from wars were needed. It involved extensive reading about emotions, like compassion, understandings, feelings of retribution, warmth etc., which are traits that all humans share and express, irrespective of culture, custom or religion.
