Jason and Constance are members of the elite class in Ruby-Land, an autocratic state where rights and wrongs, equality, beliefs and reality, are all mingled to create a society, based on merciless obedience to the governing few. They escape to a far-away cluster of unspoiled islands, the Cockle, somewhere in the South Pacific, seeking to appease distressing memories related to the regime’s cruelty, and hoping to rebuild their lives.
Though both grateful to the locals for their means to sustain themselves, they realize that adaptation to an easy life and boredom, comparing to their former home,is a challenge to which Jason seems inept to handle. A reading must.
