About protagonists – actors

28/05/2024/in Uncategorized/by Diamantoula T.

The most difficult part of writing for me is the creation and the characteristics of protagonists, in particular if I want to portray them being ordinary people, with an ordinary life, that they have to cope with a challenging or an unusual situation, as for instance, a natural calamity, a family matter or a loss, a private or a personal matter which has gone sour.

To schedule and write about them, I’d spend x-times hours speculating how I, or someone I know, or any of the various in age and appearance people walking in the street, would or could feel and respond in such circumstances, – the plethora of incidents that we daily come across, see, hear and read about.

And, it is not solely the culture, the ethnicity or any religion, that would determine our individual responses despite the influential role they have on our lives. It is all of these and the scale of morality one has developed because of culture and religion -both shaped and shaping our political beliefs, of what is right and wrong, and of what we ought to do or not to do to have it advantageous for ourself, -the politically correctness which makes us look good and just persons.

In Sharing Her Apples, the task was to show how the protagonists, each a strong character with a varied background and share in misfortune, were handling their experiences. In Katie’s case, to endure being in an extreme situation within the world of an armed conflict, which left her with shuttered hopes for a normal life and a bitter sense of injustice that she felt needed to be addressed. In Helen’s case, the experience of loss and grief that became care and love for unfortunate children.

To determine how to get started, to describe them and why they would act the way they have in the novel, I used a formula of ‘posing/answering questions, of the sort:

  • Who are the main characters (protagnists? What are their physical attributes, their culture, religion, situation in life etc.? Where do they live, -neighborhood, relations, habits etc.
  • What problem do they face? Is it an unexpected happening or a long ongoing
    question?
  • What are the choices they must make? What tension drives the story forward?
  • What does each character want? Why do they want it and at what cost?
